Richly decorated cloths of various kinds carry specific social meaning among the Kuba. Long raffia cloths appliqued with designs are worn by women. who wind them around their waists to form voluminous skirts used in dance ceremonies.

Kuba cloth is more than just a textile—it's a representation of the Kuba people's history, cultural values, and artistic achievements. The meticulous craftsmanship, deep symbolism, and functional role of the cloth make it an important part of African heritage.

Kuba cloths are used as a way to indicate one's status within the Kuba society. Different patterns and colours of Kuba cloth were associated with different levels of status, and they were often worn to show one's rank and position.

The origins of Kuba cloths can be traced back to the 17th century, when the Kuba Kingdom was established in what is now the Congo.
