This unique Fang mask originates from Gabon and has been handcrafted out of wood. The Fang people use masks during traditional ceremonies during traditional dances when they are persecuting wrongdoers. Traditions surrounding the myths of the masks have been handed down from generation to generation by the Fang Tribe.
The masks were worn by authorities responsible for identifying criminals and were also used in masquerades called ngontang, which evolved in Fang communities from the 19th to the 20th century. Specifically, the elongated masks were worn by members of the powerful Ngil secret society, which was widespread among the Fang people
Early Ngil masks from Gabon are considered some of the rarest and most celebrated African artworks.
